GENERAL INFO & SAFETY

  • Modern Vehicles are designed with an integrated safety system where the seat seatbelt and airbags work together to protect occupants during a crash. Removing or disabling one component, such as the airbags, compromises the e tire system and significantly reduces the vehicles ability to safeguard passengers. If factory airbags have been altered OR is the vehicle was not manufactured with airbags, a motorsports bucket seat with shoulder support and provisions for shoulder harness with the intentions of keeping restraints aligned MUST be installed. Aftermarket seats must be installed as per the seat manufacturers installation requirements. With the use of any bucket seat, we highly suggest a minimum of a 5 point harness, installed per the manufactories requirements. If the vehicles airbags are functional and have not been altered or removed, factory seats and seatbelts are adequate.

  • If drivers intend to take passengers, the equipment safety standard of the driver and passenger safety cell must be of the same caliber: ie: If the driver seat has a motorsports bucket seat and harness, the passenger must also have a motorsports bucket seat and harness. Matching brand, color and style are not a concern.

  • We are adopting common national standards for helmet safety. A minimum of SNELL 2015, FIA and SFI 2015 or newer, or DOT full-faced helmets manufactured after 2015 is required for driver and passenger.

  • As a mixed use facility, the safety of all disciplines must be considered. Fluid leaks are unacceptable. If a vehicle is leaking onto the truck surface, or burning off excess fluids, the participant will be required to rectify said issues before continuing to drive. Antifreeze/ Coolant must be replaced with water to prevent hazards on track. The addition of cooling agents such as Water Wetter is acceptable and encouraged.

  • I have a containment seat in my drivers seat and a standard motorsports bucket seat for my passenger, are considered of the same caliber?
    ANSWER: Yes

What dictates a motorsports bucket seat?
ANSWER: A seat with shoulder support and provisions for shoulder harness with the intentions of keeping restraints aligned.

Where will I turn in my tech sheet?
ANSWER: The flagger at the START LINE prior to your first lap.

Does installing an aftermarket steering wheel necessitate bucket seats?
ANSWER: Aftermarket steering wheels are acceptable with stock seats and belts as long as installing it has not disabled air bags. Most high quality hubs come with a resistor in order to maintain air bag functionality.

How do I know if my airbag system is functioning correctly?
ANSWER: If the airbag light is not illuminated, and has not been tampered with, then the airbag system should be functioning as intended.

If my driver and passenger safety cells do not match, can I still drive?
ANSWER: Absolutely; however, passengers are not allowed in the vehicle. This is a zero tolerance policy.

I’m unsure if my seat, harness and helmet are allowed, what can I do?
ANSWER: For clarification or special circumstances, please email the PPIR Motorsports Director Kyle Beck at kyle@ppir.com

Unleash your inner drift enthusiast at the Drift Clinic at Pikes Peak International Raceway! Perfect for beginners and intermediate drivers, this hands-on clinic offers a safe and controlled environment to learn and master the art of drifting. With expert instructors, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of car control that will have you sliding with confidence. The day includes guided practice sessions, real-time feedback, and plenty of track time to hone your skills. Participation in a PPIR Drift Clinic is a requirement for new drivers to Drift at all PPIR Festival Events. A Beginner or Advanced Drift License can be attained at the Drift Clinic and a License is necessary to Drift.

DRIFT CLINIC & DRIFT LICENSE

  • Run groups are being introduced to improve the driver and spectator experience at PPIR festivals and will be determined by either a Beginner or Advanced License. Licenses are determined by driver skill and not the level of vehicle being driven. Licenses are required to drive at any PPIR festival events.

Beginner License holders will drive ONLY during Beginner Run Groups. Advanced License holders can drive in either Run Group. Run Groups will be broken into 30 min sessions and licenses are identified by a colored sticker on the vehicle windshield.

The primary aim of PPIR Licenses and Run Groups is to create an environment where drivers can safely push their limits with drivers of equal caliber while providing an entertaining show for spectators. This system ensures maximum seat time and shorter lines for everyone.

    • NEW DRIVERS - can obtain a Drift License at any PPIR Drift Clinics throughout the year.

    • EXPERIENCED DRIVERS - a Drift License is guaranteed. A Drift License is subject to change throughout the day if necessary (Silver can move to Gold and vise versa)

    • Driven at PPIR in the past and don’t have a Drift License? After evaluation, the PPIR Motorsports Management Staff will award your Drift License at the Start Line.

    • Beginner License holders are drivers familiar with track etiquette and event participation, but are still building their confidence and skill.

    • Specific times during drift sessions will be allocated for Beginner drivers to participate and develop the experience needed to move up to our Advanced License. Moving to the Advanced License will allow drivers to drive at any time during drift sessions regardless of scheduled run group.

    • First-time drivers are FORBIDDEN from driving at a festival event as their initial drifting experience.

    • First-time drifters will be required to attend a PPIR Drift Clinic to obtain their Beginner License.

    • The Advanced License is for experienced drifters who show proficiency in both car control and track etiquette. This will include the majority of current drivers.

    • Advanced licensed drivers can participate at any time during drift sessions, regardless of Run Group.

    • A general benchmark for the advanced group is to complete three laps of the C Course layout while drifting the proper line without major mistakes.

    • Run Group placement can be promoted or demoted at any time, with opportunities at every event or Beginner License holders to advance as their skills improve.

    • Skills and performance are continuously evaluated to ensure safe and enjoyable laps for all participants.

    • Beginner License holders can ask PPIR Motorsports Management Staff to elevate their driving and be considered for promotion.

  • All out of state and guest drivers will be automatically places in the Advanced Run Group. If out of state drivers/guest drivers have attended less than 5 drift events in their drifting career, they will be asked to start in the Beginner Run Group and be evaluated for promotion.
